Engr. (Dr.) DAVID FAYBIAN EJIKEME OBIANYOR, was born on 22nd of February ,1944 into the Family of Late Pa Daniel Ezebude Obianyor ,the first son of Ogbuefi Obianyo Eze and his wife Nwagebe Eze of Umuochibinagu , Amokwe in Udi L.G.A. of Enugu State, of Nigeria. David’s mother , Ma Florence Nwanjobi Obianyor (nee Chikezie ) “IJELE NWANYI “ is the daughter of a local minor chief, CHIKEZIE of AMOKWE.

Dr. Obianyor is the second surviving son of Pa Daniel Obianyor and is husband to Mrs Obiageli R. Obianyor ( nee Okagbue of Obosi ), an Acccountant by profession , and worked for the Nigeria Airways as a General Manager. They are blessed with four children , who are University graduates in various fields of Engineering and Technology. David’s elder brother was the Late Airline Pilot, Captain John Ekemezie Obianyor of Nigeria Airways and the Biafran Airforce Civil war fame.

He had his Primary school Education at St. Mary’s CATHOLIC School ,in Colonial Port Harcourt from 1950 to 1957 and went on to have his Secondary School education in the famous Government College Umuahia, from 1958 to 1961-63, on Gonvernment Scholarship. He obtained both the Cambridge School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate in that School , producing one of the best Results at the time, in both Examinations in Government College Umuahia and in the Country.

He was admitted to study Mechanical Engineering at the foremost Engineering School in Nigeria at that time, the AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA on Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship in 1964. After the inevitable interruption of his studies by the Nigerian Civil War (1966-1970) he graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering ( B.Eng.) in 1971, again producing the best result in his class to win the Shell-BP Prize for the “Most Outstanding Graduate in Mechanical Engineering “ in 1971, at Ahmadu Bello University , Zaria.

In 1972 he joined the U.A.C. of Nigeria as an Assistant Factory Engineering Manager, and was promoted to the rank of Production Manager before leaving in 1974 for Post -graduate Studies in the U.K.

He won the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship in 1974, to carry out Research Studies in World famous CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY, U.K. He was admitted into the same College as SIR ISAAC NEWTON , the famous English Scientist who established the LAWS of MOTION ,on which most of our knowledge in Engineering and Technology is based today; and where the garden where Newton was working in the year 1666 , when the apple fell from the tree and set him thinking before he propounded those theories on motion, is located in TRINITY COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE.

David completed his Research work in 1977 and obtained a Doctorate Degree , PH.D.(Cantab) ,from Cambridge University before returning to Nigeria in 1978.

WORK IN NIGERIA

On his return to Nigeria , he worked for Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC ) as a Gas Design Engineer for one year and later joined the new and emerging NIGERIAN NATIONAL PETROLEUM CORPORATION in Lagos, where he worked for 25 years and retired in February, 2004, after reaching the Statutory retirement age of 60 years, in the rank of Ag. Group General Manager (Engineering) in the Engineering & Technology Directorate of the NNPC.

As a Pioneer member of the Nigeria LNG Technical Staff, to which he was seconded from NNPC in 1984 , he had considerable contribution to the development and final delivery of the now- running LNG Plant in Bonny , Rivers State of Nigeria. It is a matter of interest and family history, to note here that his father, Late Pa Daniel Obianyor (1900-1968) ,then a Senior Assistant Foreman, was also a Pioneer member of the team from Marine Department,Port Harcourt , who constructed the Lighthouse on Bonny Island in early 50s.
So, a previous generation of the Obianyors had contributed variously to the developments on Bonny Island, and the Obianyors are still contributing through Pa Daniel’s children and grand –children .

SPECIFIC WORK ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO
KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICES TO SOCIETY.

Dr. David Obianyor now 62 years old , has had over 35 years experience in Engineering Research ,Technology and Project Management/Actualisation in various Organisations both in and outside Nigeria. He is a Corporate member of prominent Professional Engineering and Management Institutions all over the world.
For the work he researched on, in Cambridge University, where he discovered a new Crack Propagation Law, which enables one to predict the speed with which cracks start to grow in metals, before they can be seen by the naked eyes, and lead to catastrophic failure of Engineering components, he was awarded a Doctorate Degree by Cambridge University, UK.in 1977.

He has published several scientific Papers in his field of Engineering specialisation and in Project Management, in learned Journals and Magazines in and outside Nigeria.

Dr. Obianyor is the first Nigerian from Agbaja or Umuneke (The Colonial UDI District in former Eastern Region of Nigeria), to attend and obtain a Doctorate Degree in the area of Metal Fatigue and Engineering Metallurgy from World famous University of Cambridge, UK.

His contributions in Government are as a result of his years of work in the NNPC as an Engineer, who project- managed such backbone projects as the OBEN to AJAOKUTA Gas Pipeline, FIRST ATLAS COVE JETTY, ESCRAVOS to WARRI Gas Pipeline Feasibility Studies and THE INITIAL OIL STORAGE DEPOTS Nation-wide and finally, the NIGERIA LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (LNG) Project in Bonny Island ,after 30 years of false starts .

It was Dr. Obianyor who first calculated and stated in a forum, during the Strategic Planning Years (1986-1988) of the NNPC, that the Natural Gas Resource base of Nigeria , will outlast the Crude Oil Resource base by a factor of 3 to 1, in year- terms. That statement had since been echoed by many after him, and had since influenced and focused the attention of the Nigerian Government to the role of Natural Gas in the sustenance of the Nigerian Economy, when Crude OIL would have been since gone ; and is evidenced today ,by the Government’s Petroleum Industry Policy of aggressive pursuit of the development of other Gas Utilisation Projects and the new LNG projects , like the Brass LNG and OKP LNG in Ondo State, all being managed by some of his pioneer Bonny LNG NNPC Secondee Engineers who have become senior Managers in the Corporation.

In his Hometown, AMOKWE , he has been an inspiration to both the Old and the Young, in terms of giving advice and guidance ,as the youths choose their Careers and Professions in the Petroleum Industry. He has supported self-help projects like the rural Electrification of his Umuochi Village and has consistently donated to the Building Funds of Churches in his Hometown and in the State Capital, Enugu. He supports many Charities both in and outside Nigeria.

Dr.Obianyor is currently the Chairman/Chief Executive of an indegineous Nigerian–based Company, JOMEGA NIGERIA LIMITED (JNL) – an Engineering Services Provider and Consultants in the Petroleum Industry, Power Generation, Solid Minerals, Information and Communications, Medical Technology and Aviation Financing sectors of the Economy.

Dr. OBIANYOR is a worthy son of Amokwe ,deserving of this honour and the bestowing of the Chieftaincy title of EZE CHINYELUGO I of ORJI Autonomous Community of AMOKWE in Udi LGA, Enugu State of Nigeria by The IGWE of Orji Amokwe ,HRH. R.E.Ene , OKWEDIKE of Orji Amokwe, on 30 th December, 2006 for his meritorious service in the Nigerian Public Service and exemplary service to his Community of Amokwe.
